The Grounds
The Combat Ground
The Combat Ground is where armoured fighters meet in steel — full-contact buhurt and marshal-judged longsword and arming-sword bouts — at the Medieval Fair in Benoni on Saturday 8 August 2026. The first demonstration begins at 11:15 and combat runs in rounds through the afternoon.
This is the loudest corner of the field, and the one most people circle back to. Knights fight in real harness — helm, gauntlet, and plate — under a marshal who calls the bouts and keeps every exchange inside the rules. You stand close enough to hear the blades land.
Between the judged bouts, the ring runs sword-fighting demonstrations all day, so there is almost always something moving on the sand. If you have never seen historical European martial arts up close, this is the place to start: the marshal narrates what you are watching, and the fighters break down a technique or two for the crowd.
Bring the children to the rail early for the 11:15 demonstration — sightlines fill up fast, and the front row is the best seat at the fair.
Who it's for: Anyone who came to see real combat — HEMA-curious adults, and children who will not look away from a knight in armour.
