The Grounds
The Contest Field
The Contest Field is the try-it-yourself ground at the Medieval Fair — archery, axe-throwing, horseshoe-throwing, arm-wrestling and apple-bobbing, opening at 10:00, with an all-comers' tug-of-war at dusk. It runs all day in Benoni on Saturday 8 August 2026.
If the Combat Ground is for watching, the Contest Field is for doing. The archery butts and the axe-throwing lanes open the moment the gates do at 10:00, with marshals on hand to coach first-timers — no experience needed, just a steady arm.
Around them, the field fills with the old festival games: horseshoe-throwing, arm-wrestling, and apple-bobbing for the children. There is a pie-eating contest at 12:30 for anyone brave enough, and the day's friendly grudge match — the all-comers' tug-of-war — pulls in at dusk.
It is the most social ground at the fair, and the easiest place to turn strangers into a team. Wear something you do not mind getting grass on.
Who it's for: Doers, competitive families, and anyone who would rather hold the bow than watch someone else hold it.
